Taxed is a personal project that translates your annual New Zealand income tax
into a receipt showing exactly where your money goes across the government's
core spending categories.
Every year the government collects billions in PAYE (Pay As You Earn) income tax from New Zealand
workers. This tool takes your gross annual income, calculates your estimated tax under the
2024/25 tax brackets, and then divides that figure across the major categories of Core Crown
expenditure so you can see your personal contribution to hospitals, schools, welfare, roads,
debt interest, and more.
How It Works
Your PAYE is calculated using the official 2024/25 tax brackets set by Inland Revenue.
The spending breakdown uses the functional classification of Core Crown expenses published
in the Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update 2025 (HYEFU) by the New Zealand Treasury.
Each category's percentage reflects its share of total core Crown expenditure for that year.
What It Doesn't Include
This tool shows income tax (PAYE) only. It does not include GST, company tax, ACC levies,
KiwiSaver contributions, or other deductions — though ACC and KiwiSaver are noted separately
on the receipt as they are often conflated with tax. Your actual PAYE may also differ based on
tax credits, student loan repayments, and other personal circumstances.
Data Source
Spending figures are derived from the
Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update 2025
published by The Treasury, New Zealand. Debt figures reflect the 2024/25 Core Crown balance sheet estimates.
